Interview Preview: TenPoint Crossbows; Unity among hunters
Posted by Bryan on September 3, 2007
Last week I was able to sit down with Richard L. Bednar, CEO of TenPoint Crossbows. I’m still writing up the story, but I wanted to share a quick preview of what’s to come.
Rick and I got to talking about dissension among hunters (see recent post by Lowcountry). Some hunters and organizations have been very vocal about their disapproval of the crossbow in archery season. While they all have their reasons, Rick explained that from his perspective, these positions are actually “anti-hunting positions.” Rick did a wonderful job of supporting his viewpoint. His argument was based on the fact that hunters and hunters alone provide necessary financial resources to protect hunting lands and species (via Federal Excise Tax and money from licenses). If the number of hunters increase, then so will our resources.
Crossbows have been very beneficial to the states that permit them in archery season by increasing the number of hunters in 2 ways: 1) easier for new hunters to become involved, 2) retaining hunters who have been injured or have grown too old to hunt with a compound.
Details of the interview will follow shortly, but I wanted to share this quick preview. It can be controversial, but it is a very interesting take.

I am interested to see your take on this. I have my views as well and just had a discussion with a friend about this the other day. I can’t wait to see your spin though and what side you are coming from.

Arthur,
I will look forward to learning more about your stance on this issue as well. It would be great to get some thoughtful dialog going on this topic. Thanks for the comment!

Bryan,
Glad you are covering this… I did not mean to come down so hard on our local bowhunting group the other day, but it just kills me that one group or another is always knocking the other ones.
Also, my friend has a 10 point crossbow, and it is a well made weapon. I look forward to reading the full interview.

I just don’t understand why hunters can’t get along! I’ve really noticed that the traditional archery guys have a problem with the crossbows. I’ve even heard some of the traditional shooters say that hunting with a crossbow shouldn’t even be considered an archery hunt!

Sounds like this has the makings of an interesting post.
I have never understood the whole issue with crossbows. To me, hunting is hunting and the method you use shouldn’t matter. That said, I realize there’s a lot I don’t understand about this issue.

Bryan, I’ve been using a crossbow (TenPoint) for the past 2 seasons. I’ve been shooting a bow and arrow for the past 45 years. As I get older, I realize I’m not as accurate as I used to be as compared to my younger years. Using this crossbow has without a doubt added years to my archery hunting. I thought I would soon have to stop archery hunting because of this lack of accuracy. Even thought I shoot year round, I’m getting older. Can’t keep the sight pin (while using a compound bow) on the bullseye as I once was able. Using a crossbow has kept me in the game. Can’t wait to read your entire article about your TenPoint interview.

First let me say that you have a great blog and I have enjoyed it immensely the past two days.
I guess I’ll be the first to man up to the controversial point of view and say that I do not believe crossbows should be used during archery season. My reason that I do not believe they belong in archery season is because the device is locked and loaded. It is that simple. Now if someone is disabled they should very easily be able to obtain a crossbow permit and I support reformations to make that so.
In regards to Rick stating that an opinion other than his own is considered “anti-hunting positions”, well that’s just down right rude and insulting. He’s the CEO of a crossbow manufacturer which would make him biased already. On top of that calling another hunter an “anti-hunter” is WAY worse than merely having an opinion on crossbows. In my state you are allowed to use them during firearm season so how am I preventing people from hunting?
Cheers little ears!

BuckNakedFever: First off, thanks for posting & for your kind comments about my blog. Second, great name…you’d make a great publicist for my Buck Fever series! Third, thanks for expressing your point of view…that what this is all about!
I guess I’ll respond by saying that it’s clear that you hold firm to your opinion, and I respect that. I do encourage you to check-out the full interview once it is posted (should be up within a week - I’m trying to edit the audio so I can post it with the typed version). I learned a ton, and I think there are some very interesting arguments to be heard.
Also, I never made a claim that this interview was going to be unbiased. The purpose of the interview is to…well…we’ll get to that when I post the whole interview.
Again, thanks for your comments, and please check back for the full version. I will definitely look forward to your future comments, as this issue is very important!
